Saint Lucia’s 41st Anniversary of Independence Flag Raising Ceremony in Toronto

On Friday, February 21st, 2020, the Consulate General of Saint Lucia in Toronto hosted Saint Lucia’s 41st Anniversary of Independence Flag Raising Ceremony, which is a staple on the annual calendar of activities, commemorating Saint Lucia’s Independence. The event was held at Nathan Phillips Square, on the Podium Roof of Toronto’s City Hall.

Consul General, Ms. Cheryl Francis, and staff of the Consulate General of Saint Lucia, were joined by members of the Saint Lucian Diaspora in Canada, representatives from the Caribbean Consular Corps, Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Toronto, Firefighters Without Borders, York Regional Police and other friends, and well-wishers, who braved the weather, to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Ms. Francis, in her address, emphasized the need for unity within the Diaspora and urged Saint Lucians to put aside all perceived differences and come together for the betterment of the Saint Lucian community in Canada and Saint Lucia, as a whole. She pledged her office’s commitment to working even more closely with the Saint Lucian groups and associations, in helping to foster a stronger sense of community within the Diaspora. She also noted that everyone would need to make a concerted effort, to maintain sustained engagement within the Diaspora, which will strengthen the collective contributions that can be made by the Saint Lucian community in Canada.

The ceremony was followed by a reception, where guests engaged in friendly dialogue, sharing ideas, stories and laughs, over light refreshments.
